New Jersey quarterback waiting for offers
NC State has been very consistent in telling their top quarterback prospects that they would like to have a chance to evaluate them in person at their summer camp before making a decision on offers.
One name that will be hoping to impress the State offensive coaches this summer is Stephen Shimko from Ewing (N.J.) High. Stephen Shimko has already gotten a feel for NC State when he took a visit earlier in the spring.
"I was down there for the first practice they put the pads on," Stephen Shimko noted. "I thought they looked pretty comfortable out there. The coaches all looked great and treated us well."
Stephen Shimko had originally been invited by his recruiter, defensive backs coach Mike Reed, to come down for junior day but Stephen Shimko was unable to make that trip.
"They have been recruiting me seriously for over a month," Stephen Shimko said. "They were always in contact with me but it has picked up. They want me to come to the camp for at least a day."
Stephen Shimko's relationship with the State coaching staff actually began last summer however at Boston College.
"I went to their four-day camp last year," Stephen Shimko said. "That's how Coach [Dana] Bible knew me. He was my tape and remembered me from then."
Besides Boston College and NC State, Stephen Shimko is also familiar with Rutgers, a school he says he has visited four times. Stephen Shimko said that Iowa and Syracuse have stopped by Ewing High and have expressed interest in him, and that those five schools are probably recruiting him the hardest. He does not claim any favorites at this point, nor does he know when a decision will be made.
"There is really no decision to be made right now," he said. "Whenever the offers start coming, then I have to make a choice."
Stephen Shimko threw for 1,160 yards and 13 touchdowns as a sophomore and then followed up that campaign by throwing for 1,373 yards and 18 scores last season. But Stephen Shimko felt his junior year could have been better.
"My line was very young so we didn't quite have the protection we were looking for," Stephen Shimko said. "I had to run out of the pocket a lot and that's not my game at all.
"The line has grown a little bit though, so we should have a better year this year."
Stephen Shimko was measured at a Rivals.com's junior day at 6-foot-7, 204 pounds, although Stephen Shimko says he is actually closer to 6-foot-5.5. He calls himself a pro-style quarterback.
