Savage to announce commitment to Rutgers
The Rutgers football team is on the verge of landing the most heralded quarterback recruit in school history, according to a published report.
Tom Savage, ranked as the No. 24 prospect nationally and No. 6 quarterback by Rivals.com, is expected to announce his commitment to Rutgers at a press conference Friday.
In other news, Rutgers finalized its 2008 schedule today with the addition of Morgan State on Sept. 27 at Rutgers Stadium. Morgan State, which resides in the Football Championship Subdivision ranks (formerly Divison I-AA), finished 5-6 overall and 4-4 in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference.
The Delaware County Times was the first to report Savage's commitment on its Web site today.
The 6-foot-4, 215-pound Savage is currently a junior at Cardinal O'Hara High School in Springfield, Pa., a suburb of Philadelphia. Savage, who spent Tuesday at Rutgers watching spring practice, is the third prospect to offer a non-binding commitment to the 2009 incoming class.
"Rutgers is extremely fortunate if indeed Tom Savage is going to commit to them," said Allen Wallace, national recruiting editor for SuperPrep Magazine and Scout.com. "At this stage I'm not sure if stars are that important, but you look at the offer list and see programs like Georgia, LSU, Miami, Penn State, Miami, Tennessee and that's pretty impressive."
Savage, who can't make his commitment binding until he signs a national letter of intent in February, threw for 809 yards and eight touchdowns despite missing five games with a foot injury.
Savage, who took in Rutgers' spring practice on Tuesday, is expected to be among the recruits attending the Scarlet-White game on Saturday.
